Gullah: Located off the coast of Georgia and South Carolina are the Sea Islands. These islands were populated with West Africans, Europeans and Native Americans. The Africans were enslaved and worked on the plantations owned by Colonial Americans. The West Africans were highly skilled farmers and were desired for their knowledge of rice production. Through their efforts, "Carolina Golden Rice" become a sought after commodity for export. While the South Africans were slaves and did not receive pay for their services, they were rich in their cultural heritage. The unique blend of the West African culture, combined with European and Native American influences, resulted in the distinct culture that is known as Gullah.

Gullah Gourmet: Having grown up in Charleston, Debbie Nelson (the founder of Gullah Gourmet) really appreciates the Low country. Whether it is the laid back Southern atmosphere, the smell of the salt air, the dialect of the locals, or the wonderful recipes that have been handed down from generation to generation it all remains special. The coastal islands today, as in Debbie's childhood, mean good ole home cooked meals, fresh vegetables out of the field, and seafood straight from the creek.

While a child on these islands, Debbie recollects that after a big Sunday dinner one of the favorite pastimes was to sit on the porch listening to the Gullah dialect of her friends and neighbors. Gullah Gourmet is now able to share with the World the favorite recipes of the Low country while keeping the Gullah dialect alive.
